AutoCAD Designer

AutoCAD Designer (Exempt) – Major Healthcare Government Programs (VA)

Location: Fresno, California
Employment Type: Full-Time, Onsite
FLSA Classification: Exempt
Salary Range: $65,000– $75,000 annually (commensurate with experience)


Position Summary

We are seeking a skilled AutoCAD Designer to join our team at the VA Hospital in Fresno, CA. The candidate will report to a Program Manager and collaborate with construction managers and engineering staff. Together, the team will assist VA client staff in modifying detailed drawings, managing file systems, and representing the client on major healthcare construction projects.

This role is best suited for professionals who:

  • Supported complex construction projects in healthcare, government, or institutional settings.
  • Skilled in analyzing older as-built drawings and designing complex ones with accurate mathematical calculations to support program-level decisions.
  • Strong communication skills for daily interactions with project teams and presenting information in weekly meetings.
  • Capable of operating independently while collaborating effectively with program leadership, clients, and contractors.

Key Responsibilities

  • The AutoCAD designer will be a part of a team of professionals and act as the Owner's Representative role on these programs from design through construction and closeout. The AutoCAD will be required to learn and integrate our company’s best practices related to project delivery, budget, schedule, quality and operations in the healthcare environment. The AutoCAD designer will act as an advisor/liaison with the client (user groups, design team, contractors, and facility engineering representatives). The AutoCAD services will be used to support traditional Design-Bid-Build and Design/Build contracts. A summary of the major tasks is below.

  • Operate and apply Computer-Aided Design (CAD) equipment.
  • Create and modify detailed drawings using CAD from sketches, layouts, or notes from engineering.
  • Contribute design modifications to improve manufacturing operations or product quality.
  • Check drawing plots for correctness and conformance to standards.
  • Collaborate with engineers on model accuracy, design, drafting standards, and documentation.
  • Manage systems including file maintenance, backup, and storage.
  • Perform complex design tasks with limited supervision, understanding current CAD software applications.
  • Resolve complex problems and make routine recommendations using standard practices.
  • Develop creative solutions with minimal client or user input.
  • Understand the impact of decisions on schedules and project timelines.

Education & Experience

Candidate may substitute relevant years of experience in place of formal education for this role.

Education: One of the following is preferred.

  • Autodesk Certified Professional (ACP)
  • Architectural Certified Drafter
  • Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in Computer-Aided Drafting and Design
  • Architectural Drafting Technology degree

Experience

  • Minimum of two (2) years of technical training experience.
  • Minimum of four (4) years of experience in CAD-related software.
  • Candidates may be asked to provide examples or documentation of completed projects demonstrating relevant experience
  • Requirements of local state and federal jurisdiction in relation to the Project.
  • Construction Contract Documents including Front End and Technical Specifications and drawings to readily understand and assess requirements.
  • Working knowledge of engineering services, building codes, and scheduling to lead the project’s success.

Additional Requirements

  • Knowledge of construction practices, quality assurance, and MEP Drafting.
  • Proven ability to use independent judgment in administrative, design, and compliance areas.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Acrobat.
  • Skilled in identifying dimensioning and annotation errors, especially in electrical/mechanical systems.
  • Strong written, verbal, and organizational communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Leadership: Must possess the ability to collaborate and integrate with other professionals
  • Building construction experience
  • Experience with Healthcare and Federal projects.
  • CCM, PMP certifications

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

  • Full-time onsite work at an active construction site and office environment
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, and use standard office equipment
